Julian and Maria Martinez, rectangular meal bowl, 1909. At the beginning of their pottery-making collaboration, the husband-and-wife team made this bowl at the request of Edgar Hewett using clay he found at Puye ruins and an Avanyu serpent from a rock art panel the ancestral village, Tsirege. This bowl is the first depiction of the water serpent specifically made for the non-Pueblo world. Courtesy Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Santa Fe, New Mexico, MIAC 1769/12.
