Toyokuni III (aka Kunisada), ukiyo-e (woodblock print), 1857. Paper, ink. 14 3⁄16 × 9 13 ⁄16 in. International Folk Art Foundation, Museum of International Folk Art (T.2019.18.1). Photograph by Addison Doty. This woodblock print depicts actors performing the story of Okiku and the Dish Mansion. The inspiration for the modern horror classic The Ring (2002), Okiku was a servant woman killed by her samurai overlord when she broke a dish and rejected his advances. He murdered her by throwing her down a well and each night she came back to haunt him, counting dishes over and over.
